The Directorate General of Training (DGT) is the apex organization for development and co-ordination at National level for the programmes relating to vocational training including Women’s Vocational Training and Employment Services. Industrial Training Institutes are under the administrative and financial control of State Governments or Union Territory Administrations. DGT also operates Vocational Training Schemes in some of the specialized areas through field institutes under its direct control. Development of these programmes at national level, deciding policies, setting standards and procedures, training of instructors and trade testing are under the purview of DGT. The National Skill Training Institute is a field unit of the Directorate General of Training, Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Government of India. The history of the institute dated back to 1983, when it was started as ‘Model ITI’ at Beypore Calicut as model to implement the restructured pattern of Craftsmen Training. In the year 1997,it was shifted to the present premises at Govindapuram ,Calicut. Envisaging vast expansion and diversification of its training activities, erstwhile Model ITI was upgraded in 2014 as Advanced Training institute, Calicut and Craft Instructor Training Courses were started. Short term courses are introduced in 2017 to cater the demands of industries, aspiring students and educators. In May 2018,the institute has been renamed from Advanced Training Institute to National Skill Training Institute.
